This course introduces the basic open data overview to let students understand the benefits of open meteorological data to science, life and industry. The main motivation is aimed to train students for using the CWB’s meteorological open data by python programming language, then to develop professional ability to produce and draw meteorological related data. In addition, this course also introduces the application of meteorological open data between CWB and downstream users (such as the Heat Index, from the CWB and the Ministry of Health and Welfare), hope to help students have more conception with the importance of meteorological open data for life.

The severe damages were usually caused by strong winds and heavy precipitation, the occurrences of such meteorological phenomena are related to approaching front, typhoon, mesoscale convection system, hailstorm, and squall line etc. Those weather systems can be discussed in the category of mesoscale meteorology. Recently, more complete pictures of mesoscale weather systems can be well documented by high spatial and temporal resolution of observations due to advanced technology on observational instruments and atmospheric remote sensing. This course will start from the introduction in the definition of mesoscale meteorology onto the physical mechanisms in the processes of initiation, development, maintenance, and dissipation associated with the weather systems. Atmospheric convection, stability, dynamic and thermodynamic characteristic are discussed. The details in enhancement of orographic precipitation, the changes of airflow nearby terrains will also be included in this course. The oral presentation is required, students need to collect data, analyze the data, and present the results in the end of semester.

Within the disciplinary of climate change and variability, the participation of the ocean is important. The ocean serves as a giant heat reservoir regulating the heat budget of the climate system, in addition, major climate fluctuations are dominated by the ocean-atmosphere coupled system. Besides the mixed layer process and the air-sea flux exchange, the oceanic dynamical process, which is closely linked with the climate variability and have potential influence on the sea surface temperature variation, are mostly overlooked.
This course is designed for atmosphere major students to get a broader understanding of the physical processes that occur in the ocean. Since both the atmosphere and the ocean are fluid, their governing equations are quite similar, it is therefore important and suitable for atmosphere major students to take this course. The course will cover the basic fluid dynamics equations, turbulent mixing, dynamics of the ocean currents and wind-driven circulation theories as well as the air-sea coupling processes.

Scientific computing has traditionally required the highest performance. Nowadays there are quite a few modern programming languages which are object-oriented, such as Python and Julia, appropriate for scientific and numerical computing with performance comparable to traditional statically-typed languages. Besides learning the features of the language, students will be trained to write programs that can be applied to atmospheric and oceanic sciences problems. It is suggested that students have taken a programming course (such as in Fortran or C) before enrolling in this course.

The Numerical Experiments of Atmospheric Sciences is a special course for senior level undergraduate students or graduate students. In this course, we will discuss the mechanisms of atmospheric phenomena and basic physical concepts via doing numerical experiments. The purpose of this course is to improve students’ understanding of the basic skills of FORTRAN programing, numeric data analyzing and scientific presentation. The course material can increase students’ thinking about the atmospheric process, which also can apply to other advanced courses. The course will have four different term projects which related to the atmospheric thermodynamic, radiation, cloud microphysics and fluid dynamics. Students will not only learn how to write the numerical codes, but also how to design an experiment in this course.
